Rationale

Personal, social and health education (PSHE) enables children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of our society and play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community.

Personal Social Health Education and Relationships Education

We teach to the statutory guidelines for Relationships and Sex Education required by the National Curriculum (this is statutory from the year 2020)

We teach skills and objectives recommended by the British PSHE Association through the ‘Jigsaw’ Scheme of Work.

The Jigsaw scheme of work also covers the required content of the SMSC and British Values education.

Curriculum design for PSHE

The design of our Personal Social Health Education and Relationships Education curriculum is taught through the ‘Jigsaw’ Scheme of Work, which is an integrated scheme of learning for PSHE with emphasis on emotional literacy, mental health, SMSC and spiritual development. This scheme aims to prepare children for life, helping them know and value who they truly are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.

PSHE lessons are taught throughout the school year in every year group. 

Curriculum Choices for PSHE:

  • We plan annual ‘special’ events to raise awareness for issues relating to PSHE, such as Anti-Bullying Week, Children in Need day and multicultural day which celebrates the diversity in our school community.
  • We have visitors to school to enhance our pupils’ learning experiences such as vets, dental nurses, childline support workers, First Aid trainers and local community leaders. These are planned as appropriate to the age of the pupils and the topics they are covering in their class.
